In the year 1990, 26th June, few local Tour Operators of Sikkim initiated the formation of Travel Agents Association of Sikkim. Meeting was more or less of knowing each other, brainstorming and discussion on various issues pertaining to tourism in Sikkim. Various other issues were also taken up such as fragile ecosystem of the area, restrictions, carrying capacity and co-operation amongst the tour operators. This move prompted the formation of Travel Agents’ Association of Sikkim.
 

Mr. Karma Gyatso, Principal Secretary Tourism, Government of Sikkim called a meeting between the tourism department and tour operators existing during that time. A grand meeting was held in Hotel Mayur hosted by Mr.Karma Gyatso, then secretary tourism on 2nd July 1990. This was the first ever meeting between government and private stakeholders.
 

The same meeting nominated the first ad-hoc committee in presence of Secretary Tourism and other officers. Mr.Gyatso extended full support to this association, which was in its infancy stage. Following were entrusted to work on the constitution, research and gathering of members.

On 16th September 1991, TAAS was formerly registered with the government of Sikkim. Untiring effort paved the way for strengthening the association. The office bearers put up various proposals to government and numerous familiarization tours were organized for the members and visiting tour operators and travel trade writers. There after many elections for the post of office bearers were held and most elected and as well sitting members put in their effort to build TAAS as one of the best Association of Sikkim. They all faced numerous challenges yet TAAS grew from mere 10 member team to 135 member body at present.
