Department
of Tourism and TAAS conducted Rafting expedition in river
Teesta.
Eco-tourism Trainings
TAAS became
the collaborator for Sikkim Biodiversity & Ecotourism Project
funded by US AID along with Green Circle, G.B.Pant Institute, The
Mountain Institute, America in the year 1995-97. Most of the
trainings on ecotourism were conducted during this time.
The
international experts imparted numerous trainings on eco-tourism.
Courses were covered on Marketing Strategies, Guides, Specialized
Guides, Trekking Porters, Yak Men, Cooks, Lodge Operators, and
Local. Trainings were also provided to local community of the area
on sustainable development of tourism. Brochure was produced aiming
at marketing of Ecotourism and mass circulation of Code of Conduct
for the members keeping in view the protection of environment,
culture, tradition and welfare of the staff.
TAAN
Visit
16 members
of Trekking Agents’ Association of Nepal visited Sikkim for three
days workshop on eco tourism and sharing of experiences. Various
discussions were taken up and a memorandum of understanding was
signed between TAAS & TAAN. Later TAAN invited TAAS on
reciprocal basis.
World
Tourism Day
TAAS
initiated and organized first ever World Tourism Day in Gangtok with
lot of fanfare. The association also requested the government for
the relaxation of permit for foreign tourists visiting Sikkim. Now
the permit for foreigners can be obtained without any problem for a
period of 15 days and extendable. Rangpo check post began provided
15 days permit.
With the request by TAAS new areas were
opened such as extreme North Sikkim and Singalila Range
Treks. |
